By the law of averages, most games allow for normal - or minimal - wear upon the joysticks (specifically the right one, or whichever a player uses to control the camera) but there are some titles that will put a controller through grueling paces. New players will have fun with the game’s simplicity, while more experienced players will feel as if there’s a great bullet hell game stuck within a decent shoot em’ up.Yes, wear and tear are expected to occur with time, even on the sturdiest controllers, but the longevity of the joystick can heavily depend on the games being played. The game boasts over 100 levels, but doesn’t do anything interesting with those levels, players will face the same types of enemies over and over again.įor a shoot em’ up Drifting Lands is painfully slow, veterans of the genre will become bored with the gameplay quickly, while new players may like the slower pace.

Upgrades will change how much health or shield a ship has, while gears can also upgrade these stats some will actually degrade a section in order to power up another.įor every little thing Drifting Lands does right it fumbles something else. All three ships have three different attributes Structure, Power and Navigation. The upgrades is where the RPG elements come in, players don’t gain experiences while playing levels, instead they gain credits that can be exchanged to power up their ships.

The shop will sell upgrades that can only be applied if the ship meets a certain criteria, such as structure or power. Like any loot system everything is random, playing a certain level won’t grant you certain gear, but the game also supplies loot items through a store that players can visit before and after every mission. The loot players get from finishing levels plays an important part in progressing the game, players may pick up new weapons, shields, thrusters and other items to make their ship stronger. The only real difference in the modes are the things that players can lose. Normal mode Is meant for players well versed in shoot em’ ups, upon death players could lose valuable loot or even their entire ship.įorgiving Mode is exactly as it sounds, players will never lose their ships and instead of losing items they’re simply broken and can be repaired for a price.īoth modes feel the same, playing on normal won’t change the amount of damage enemies cause nor will it add in special enemies or increase the number of enemies on screen. The two modes mentioned earlier are Normal mode and Forgiving Mode. This may sound complicated for anybody new to this genre of shooters, but Drifting Lands does a great job of making things easy to get into for newer players, while veteran players will feel left out, this is due to the game being far too forgiving. The game tries to create a learning curve that could fit any and all players, there are two different difficulty setting and all three ships have their own strengths and flaws. At times the game will throw dozens upon dozens of enemies at you, just to slow everything back to a crawl for the majority of a mission. The biggest draw to any shoot em’ up is the fun fast paced gun play and Drifting Lands drops the ball on one end but has fun gun play, where it fails at is the fast paced part. No matter what weapon you choose they nearly all have the same sound, the biggest difference being that some are played faster than others. The sound effects are passable, it’s nothing special, just the same old generic laser blaster sound effects. Heck sometimes the game would forget that it was supposed to be playing a level’s theme music and would delay playing it.

The sounds in Drifting Lands is near arcade like, and by that I mean you will hear all of the music and sound effects in no time, so much so it’s easy to actually forget the music is playing.
